Pick a Poem

We have been spending a significant amount of time on poetry. This week, I want you to find a poem that you admire. Whether it's a classic childhood poem, a newly discovered poem, or a poem that we have read in class, choose one and copy and paste it into your post.
BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE NAME AND THE POET!

Then, in at least 8 sentences, explain why you like the poem. Talk about the figurative language, the rhythm or rhyming, or the overall meaning of the poem. What makes it so great? Is it powerful? Is it cheerful? Do you like the mood or tone it conveys?

Your post is due no later than Friday at 5pm!

  1. My Life by Erin

    Thinking back on my life, when I was a little child;
So outrageous and bubbly doing things that were wild.
    Thinking back on my life, all those wonderful years;
Not a care in the world, no worries, no fears.
Thinking back on my life, all the advice I was told:
What a wonderful child, my parents hoped they would mold.
    But as we all know, it's not always what we dreamed;
Life gets harder, and to us it's not always how it seemed.
    There are two roads in life: the right one and wrong one;
The wrong one I chose and it seemed life was done.
    But as time has went on, I had to agree;
I can do and be anything I want to achieve.
    I have tried over and over and failed to succeed;
    But I am a SOLDIER, that's what I believe.
    My LIFE is too precious to let it slip away;
I must try harder and harder each coming day.
    One day soon, I'll be All that I am;
How do I know you ask?
    BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN!!!!

I like this poem because it explains how you grow up and you make mistakes but you can turn it around. Then, if you can' t accomplish something you can try again on till you accomplish it. This poem is powerful to me because I always make mistakes. It makes me feel good knowing that I can be better.

  2. Roses are red
    Violets are blue
    I love the Biebs
    And so do you

    Roses are red
    Orange and teal
    For Bieber fans
    Whose love is real

    Roses are red
    Yellow and gold
    For Bieber fans
    Both young and old

    By: Felicity Luckey

I like this poem because it talks about Justin Bieber. I love Justin Bieber! It has three stanzas. It is a quatrain poem where the first and third line rhyme and the second and fourth line rhyme. This poem is very simple and cute, so it doesn’t have much figurative language. It is cheerful because Justin Bieber is a cheerful person, and there are only nice things to say about him. The tone is a little light-hearted because it’s not so serious.

  3. Still I Rise by Maya Angelou
You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

    Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
    Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
    With the certainty of tides,
    Just like hopes springing high,
    Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
    Bowed head and lowered eyes?
    Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
    Weakened by my soulful cries.

    Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

I like this poem because it deep. Shes talking about girl power. In the poem she says “do you want to see me broken?” She means “do you want to see me sad, crying?“ She’s never going to give up,or never break down and cry. She’s always going to rise. I like the meaning of the poem because I like to think that I will rise up as well.

  4. Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too
    By : Shel Silverstien

Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too
Went for a ride in a flying shoe.
    "Hooray!"
    "What fun!"
    "It's time we flew!"
Said Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too.

Ickle was captain, and Pickle was crew
And Tickle served coffee and mulligan stew
    As higher
    And higher
    And higher they flew,
Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too.

Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too,
Over the sun and beyond the blue.
    "Hold on!"
    "Stay in!"
    "I hope we do!"
Cried Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too.

Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle too
Never returned to the world they knew,
    And nobody
    Knows what's
    Happened to
Dear Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too.

There is a bunch of rhyming in this poem. Here is an example Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too. Also there is repetition, personification. I think the meaning of the poem is that you can have an adventure and don’t have to go back to the old you if you don’t want too. I think what makes this poem so great that if you believe you can go somewhere and not go back to your old somewhere you go anywhere. This is powerful because you go with your gut.

I like this poem because it is like a life lesson. It talks about how we grow up. And also how we evolve. You can become better and do better with your life. The mood of the poem is series.

  6. Hand in hand
    or far apart
    you are forever
    in my heart

    - Anonymous

I love this poem! This poem can be viewed in many ways. It can be viewed in the aspect of love: love of a family member, love of a friend or love of someone you have lost. When I read this poem I think of my grandmother who has passed. In a sense, it is saying to me that even if you're not there with the person you love they will forever be with apart of you and who you are. Along with all of that, the poem has figurative language. "Hand in hand" is repetition, "far apart" and "in my heart" is rhyme. The words really just flow well together, adding a powerful meaning.

  7. Hands
    © Jherine N. Saine
    I haven't forgotten
That I am just one person,
That I am but one voice
    Attempting to stand out
    From the crowd.

    I remember
    That I have fallen
    Amidst the laughter
That surrounds me, and that sometimes
    It gets too loud.

    I know
    That I can't sit here
    And expect my silence
    To evoke change
    Without reason.

    I can see
    That I don't know everything,
    That I can't expect
    My hand to be held
    Always.

    I can feel
    That time is slipping
    By me, that it
Will be gone if I just
    Stand still.

    I have heard
    That there are a million
    Other voices that sound
    Like mine, that want also
    To be heard.

    I've been told
    That it's not enough to
    Wish for dreams, that I
    Have to work them
    Into reality.

    I know that I don't know
All that I think I know.
    I know I won't see all of
The places I wish to go.
    I know I'm not ready
For all that the world demands,
You don't have to always hold me,
Just let me see your hands.

    I know
    That there's a lot
    That I won't understand,
    That you don't have all
    Of the answers.

    I haven't forgotten
That I have to grow up
    And someday live without
    Your voice, your opinion--
    Making my own decisions.

    I know that I don't know
All that I think I know.
I know that I may not see all
Of the places I want to someday go.
I know I'm not ready for everything
    That I won't always understand
You don't have to always hold me
    But sometimes. . .
    Just let me touch your
    Hand

This poem is inspirational because it tells you that you don't have to fit in with the crowd. You should be unique. Also there is an example of repetition in the poem: I know that I don't know
All that I think I know. I this statement the word know is said 3 times. I think a dark but happy mood is conveyed. This poem inspired me to be unique and not like every one else.

  8. Epipoem
    From: Debi Sheehan

"A relationship is like a rose, How long it lasts no one knows; Love can erase an awful past, Love can be yours, you'll see at last; To feel that love, it makes you sigh, to have it leave, You'd rather die; You hope you've found that special rose, 'Cause you love and care for the one you chose.:" -Rob Cella

    I always thought
    You'd be the one
    To hold me closely.

    The one I've waited
    So patiently to come,
    My one true love.

    Then I found out,
    You're just like the rest
    But I wanted you still.

    I thought that maybe
    I could make you
    Be the one.

    But I was wrong.
    So I'm still waiting,
For I will find the one.

The one, I'll share my life with,
    Who will love me
    As I love him.

    We'll go on together,
    And we'll be happy,
    Hopefully to go on forever.

I chose a poem written by my older sister for her wrote for publication class when she was in high school. The assignment was to find a quote online and create a poem that goes a long with it. The poem is about love. It begins with a relationship that has turned out to be bad, but not giving upon finding true love. I really like this one because my sister doesn't do the traditional rhyming that most poets do. The quote she used has all the rhythm, and style goes on to use her own style. It is a very powerful poem that begins sadly but ends up best. This is a great poem from her collection of work because most of her writing is dark and sad, but with this one she shows that she will not giving up.

  9. I chose the poem I'm Making A LIst by Shel Silverstein.

I'm making a list of the things I must say
    for politeness,
And goodness and kindness and gentleness
    sweetness and rightness
Hello, pardon me,how are you, bless you, may I ? Thank you
    Goodbye

If you know some that I've forgot,
Please stick them in your eye!

I chose this poem by Shel Silverstein because it was short and funny. I like the the rhyming at the end of the poem. It surprised me at the end of the poem. I liked the last line the best. Please stick them in your eye. I like the way he writes the poems. The meaning of the poem is to show how to have manners. I

  10. Out of all the poems I have heard. This poem is one of my favorites.

    Advice
    By: Shel Silverstein

    William Tell, William Tell,
Take your arrow, grip it well,
There's the apple- aim for the middle-
Oh well, you just missed by a little.

I like that poem because it is funny and I can relate to it a little. I have had some dumb situations where people tell me something and I forget it or I just don't do it and then I wish I had listened to their advice. Also the poem had repetition like "William Tell, William Tell...." and there are some rhyming at the end of the lines for example "....aim for the middle,... missed by a little." Overall, I remember this poem as a lesson learning poem. It is funny also while you learn something. This has one stanzas. Shel Silverstein is a great author!

  11. Acting:

    The thrill I have

    When reading all my lines

    Doing a dance

    Feeling like Gregory Hines.

    I can be another person

    Different from myself

    This one's barely getting along

She's not in very good health.

    This man is funny

    This one's quite sad

    The poor girl is crying

    That woman is mad.

Why do I feel this way?

    I really don't know

    Maybe I was just born

    To put on a show.

This poem was written by a girl name Kate. Her last name is anonymous but what she wrote is something I can relate to. Acting is my life and I connect with her when she talks about reading the lines and becoming another person and how she was born to put on a show. The poem says it all in only a few sentences. The first time I read it, I immediately connected with it and loved it. The second time, I found some really good poetic devices. I found some alliteration, similes, metaphors, etc. And the third time, I already new what it was about. This poem means a lot to me and it always will.

  12. How did it get so late so soon?
    It’s night before it’s afternoon.
December is here before it’s June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?
    ~Dr. Seuss
This poem by Dr. Seuss is a great poem because he talks about how time moves too fast. This poem is about winter. When he says "it is night before it is afternoon",He means how the night comes faster than in any other season. When Dr. Seuss states in his poem "December is here before it's June" he means how the summer goes by fast. I like this poem because it reminds you of how precious time can be. Also that we should not waist it.

  13. I Believe

    I believe in pink.
    I believe that laughing
    is the best calorie burner.
I believe in kissing, kissing a lot.
I believe in being strong when
everything seems to be going wrong.
I believe that happy girls are the
prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow
is another day and I believe in miracles
    -Audrey Hepburn

I love this poem! There is a lot of figurative language in this poem. For instance, “kissing, kissing” in line 4 is repetition. It repeats itself more than once. There’s also alliteration in “kissing, kissing” because they both start with the letter “k” and make the same sound. There is also repetition in this whole poem because it’s always saying in every sentence “I believe”. It’s repeating itself in every sentence and that’s what repetition is. In line 5, it says the word “strong” and in line 6, it says the word “wrong”. They both rhyme. They both have the “rong” sound at the end of the word and that’s why they rhyme. Another poetic device in this poem is a metaphor. In lines 2 and 3 “laughing” and “calorie burner” are being compared. Also, in lines 7 and 8 “happy girls” and “prettiest girls” are being compared too. In my opinion, Aubrey Hepburn was trying to say, living life is what you make of it. She was obviously saying a positive message to everyone. This poem is a very special poem that has a lot of powerful meanings to it. The tone to this poem brightens my whole world.

  14. Detail of the Hayfield
    by Richard Siken
"I followed myself for a long while, deep into the field."

I like and admire this poem because this poem has a meaning underneath the thing you automatically think of. It's not really about a hay field. It's about the state of mind a person is in when the are spacing out. They just follow the self for a long while and don't really know whats happening around them. That's the meaning behind the poem, that's why I like it.

    ~Sorry the post is late.
